VaGoldMaps is an interactive Virginia gold map built to help explore that question. The platform combines historic records and modern geological data to create a detailed Virginia gold mines map focused on the belt: historic mine locations, structural geology, and terrain data.

Data sources include Virginia Energy DGMR, USGS MRDS, and USGS 3DEP LiDAR. The map uses Leaflet so you can toggle layers and basemaps.
The Virginia Gold-Pyrite Belt is a northeast-trending geologic belt running roughly 140 miles across central Virginia. It contains historic gold mines, gold-favorable bedrock units, and structural fault systems associated with mineralization. The belt extends from Fairfax County through the Piedmont region to the North Carolina border, and represents the core of Virginia's historic gold mining activity.
VaGoldMaps combines several geological datasets including historic gold mine locations, fault systems, gold-favorable lithology, fault intersections, the Virginia Gold-Pyrite Belt boundary, and USGS 3DEP LiDAR hillshade layers.
Historic mine locations come from Virginia Energy Division of Geology and Mineral Resources (DGMR) and USGS Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS). These sources compile historical mining records, geological reports, and field surveys conducted over more than a century of exploration.
Geological studies of the Virginia Gold-Pyrite Belt indicate several fault orientations frequently associated with lode gold mineralization: N5–15°W, N0–15°E, and N20°W. VaGoldMaps highlights these structures and their intersections to help researchers study structural patterns within the belt.
