VaGoldMaps ("the app") is designed to work fully on your device. This policy explains what data the app uses and how.
VaGoldMaps uses your device's location, with your permission, to show your position on the map and to center or follow the map while you're in the field. Your location is processed entirely on your device and is never transmitted to us or to any third party, and we do not store your location history.
You can revoke location access at any time in your device's Settings app.
In the iPhone app, any locations, pins, tracks, or notes you save in the app are stored locally on your device using standard on-device storage. This data is not uploaded to any server and is not accessible to us. If you delete the app, this data is deleted with it. On the website, places you save are stored with your account so you can see them when you sign in.
The website is served through Amazon CloudFront. We keep access logs in our AWS account so we can understand traffic volume and investigate security issues. Those logs can include IP address, country, requested URL, referrer, and browser user-agent. We do not use them for advertising, and we do not sell them. Logs are deleted automatically after 90 days.
On vagoldmaps.com we use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate traffic and how people use the map and pages (for example which routes are opened and map searches). We do not use Google Analytics for advertising or remarketing, and we do not send your email or name in analytics events. You can learn more about Google's practices and opt out at Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on and in Google's Privacy Policy.
We use Google Analytics to see how the site is used. When you use the map, it gets the map spot (to within a few feet), how far you are zoomed in, and the county. It also gets the name, type, and record number shown in any popup you open, which layers you turn on or off, and when you drop or save a pin. It never gets the names of your saved places. When you are signed in, it also gets a scrambled account id, never your email.
When you sign up, we record how you found us. That means the first page you landed on, the site that sent you, any campaign tags in the link, and the page and button you used to sign up. If you used the map first, we also record the last spot you viewed (to about a city block), its county, the saved place you had open, the layer you had on, how far you were zoomed in, and when.
VaGoldMaps does not use advertising or crash-reporting services, and does not sell personal data. The iPhone app is designed for on-device use. The website has optional accounts for saved places and membership.
The app displays publicly available map data (such as USGS topographic data, mine and geological datasets, and parcel boundaries) from third-party and government sources. Viewing this data does not involve sending any information about you to those sources.
VaGoldMaps does not knowingly collect personal data from children. The website is not directed at children.
If VaGoldMaps adds features that change how data is handled (for example, an optional account or sync feature), this policy will be updated before that feature is available, and the updated policy will be linked from the app's App Store listing.
